Zambeef is a major cropping operation growing 350 hectares of
irrigated crops and 1,100 hectares of dry land crops per year. Zambeef
continues to expand its cropping activities as this is a very
successful division within the company. During the current year
Zambeef commissioned two new centre pivots totaling 150 hectares.
The
irrigated crops include wheat, winter maize and lucern for the dairy
while the dry land crops include commercial maize, soyas and maize
silage for the dairy. The cropping division is not only a profitable
division in its own right but also complements the beef business very
well with the wheat straw being bailed and fed to the cattle in the
feedlot after the wheat is combined. In addition cattle are
backgrounded on the maize stova prior to being put in the feedlot.
Zambeef has commissioned a modern drier and silo system and with the
priority placed on agriculture by the new Zambian government, Zambeef
plans to continue expanding this division.
